Graduation

Tonight we attended the graduation ceremony for the fifth graders at CJ's school.
CJ's class sang a song for the graduates (oops, she forgot to spit out her gum first!).

Then we had a chance to say goodbye to her teachers and friends.

Hall Musician

It seems a bit obvious that CJ's school is in an urban area when she comes home and sets up a music show in a street musician fashion. She even has an open box for her guests to throw a coin in so she can count how many people stopped by.

The Composer

Daddy was talking about work and mentioned Australia. That prompted CJ to start a chant about Australia. She went to her room and grabbed instruments for Mama and Daddy to join in with her. Then she disappeared again and when she came back she had this paper full of music notes and her ukulele. She played us the song she created (sorry the video is too dark). Maybe we need to get her back into music classes.

Sunny Day Song

We were sitting out front and CJ started singing. Loud. Then she went and got an instrument and a book and started making up songs to go with the pictures in the book. If anyone were to walk by (which many people did), the volume increased. She really loves her music.

Hey Soul Sister

The Music Party

CJ had a great birthday party. She wore her new twirl dress and we headed out to a local music school where family and friends joined us. The kids got flashing guitar necklaces and made kazoos until the show started. There were lots of songs and instruments and music games before we had pizza. Then CJ and some of her friends took a turn singing at the microphone. CJ sang "Hey Soul Sister" by Train. She needed a little help with the words, but stuck it out for the whole song. We had a musical instrument exchange and enjoyed Wacky Cake cupcakes with whipped cream frosting thanks to Mama's new cream whipper. Yum.

Soul Girl

She must have heard this song at the party today. She popped up during dinner and started singing it. Later she wanted to know where your soul is in your body.

The Composer

When CJ got home from music class today she grabbed a piece of paper and started to duplicate an exercise they did in class today of writing music notes. They have a ta, ti ti, and a tommmmm. Here's her work.

Little Miss Independent

Today was the first day of our new session of music class for CJ so all the parents stayed. It's the same group as last term, with one new boy. This is the big kids class and they are learning a lot. During one song the kids each had an opportunity to raise their hand and decide what everyone could "do" to the music. There were a couple of ideas and then one child chose "running". It became the only thing that the children would choose. CJ put her hand up, but didn't have an idea at first. When the teacher came back to her (after 5 more "running" choices), CJ chose "dancing". I think everyone was glad to have a break from the running. How creative she is. Then we went back to "running" for another child or two before the song was over. Mama was glad to see her independence.

Me and You

Here's the dance of the day. Don't worry if you don't understand all the words to the song - sometimes she has her own language.

CJ's solution to your problems -
just sing a song
